CSTI: Leading the Way in Sustainable Tourism in Cyprus

Sustainable tourism is more than just a trend - it’s a vital commitment to protecting our island!

Building a sustainable tourism industry requires the active participation of everyone involved, whether directly or indirectly. It also calls for initiative, responsibility, and collective effort to ensure widespread engagement and lasting impact.

The Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) was founded in 2006 by tourism professionals with a vision to make Cyprus the leading sustainable tourism destination in the Mediterranean. Since its inception, CSTI has played a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable tourism sector by promoting practices that benefit the environment, society, and the economy.

The organisation was born out of a two-year project by the Travel Foundation UK, in collaboration with top UK tour operators. Today, CSTI operates as an independent organisation, unwavering in its commitment to sustainable tourism.

CSTI Mission
At CSTI, they believe that collaboration amongst all stakeholders in the tourism sector is essential for achieving sustainable development. Through education, awareness programs, and hands-on initiatives, they work tirelessly to reduce their environmental footprint and safeguard Cyprus’ natural and cultural heritage.

Their vision is to position Cyprus as the foremost sustainable destination in the Mediterranean, fostering a tourism model that balances economic growth, community well-being, and environmental stewardship.

Over the years, CSTI has cultivated strong partnerships with local and international organisations, including:

  • UK Travel Foundation
  • TUI Care Foundation
  • Prince Albert Foundation
  • International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
  • World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)
