A quick look at some of the top must-see museums in Limassol District

From the farthest corner of the province up to the heart of the town, Limassol provides you the opportunity to visit a variety of museums which are fascinating with the historic and cultural heritage that they are accommodating. It is well known that from the ancient years, the island of Cyprus had attracted several conquerors such as Egypts, Romans, Franks and Ottomans. Cyprus Medieval Museum (Limassol Castle)

Significant periods that covers: 3rd - 18th century AD (Medieval Age, Byzantine Period, Frankish Period, Venetian Period, Turkish Period).

What you can see there: Exhibits which reflect the socio-economic and religious life of the island , as well as weapons and equipment of the specific periods. Different historical sources say that Richard the Lionheart got married to his lovely wife Bereggaria at the specific castle, on 1191 AD.

Limassol Archaeological Museum

Significant periods that covers: 10th century BC – 330 AD  (Mesolithic Age, Neolithic Age, Chalcolithic Age, Geometric and Archaic Period, Hellenistic Period, Roman Period).

What you can see there: You will find many interesting foundings that come from the ancient city of Limassol and the surrounding area, of the above historic periods.

Educational and Archaeological Museum, Kato Polemidia

Significant periods that covers: 2300 BC– 330 AD (Chalcolithic Age, Geometric and Archaic Age, Hellenistic Period, Roman Period)

What you can see there: The museum accomodates 17 stunning vessels, of the above historic periods.

Local Archaeological Kourion Museum

Significant periods that covers: 8th century BC  – 4th century AD (Neolithic Age, Chalcolithic Age, Geometric and Archaic Age, Hellenistic Period, Roman Period)

What you can see there: Foundings from the ancient city of Kourio and the surrounding area, as well as the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates. Of particular interest, are the skeletons of a three-member family (photo), who lost their lifes at the terrific earthquake on 365 AD. The specific earthquake had destroyed the whole Kourion town.

Byzantine Εcclesiastical Museum of Mary's Holy Church, Agros

Significant periods that covers: 325 AD – 1191 AD (Byzantine Period)

What you can see there: Exhibits and everything else that had survived from a historic monastery which unfortunately does not exist anymore, at Troodos mountain. Some of them are the iconostasis, many byzantine ecclesiastical icons as well as the Holy Table.

Holy Cross Byzantine Chapel

Significant periods that covers: 13th– 20th century AD. (Frankish Period, Venetian Period, Turkish Period, British Empire Period, Modern Period)

What you can see there: Wall paintings of the 15th century, which are presenting the story of finding the Holy Cross, the Four Evangelists, the Annunciation and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Additionally, many images and sacred vassels of the specific historic periods, are exposed here.

Museum of Strategos Georgios Grivas Dighenis.

Significant periods that covers: 1955-1959 AD (Cypriot's liberation war against British Empire).

What you can see there: Personal items, photographic and printed material, as well as the shelter of Georgios Grivas Dighenis, who as a General and the main leader of "National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters", he directed the revolutionary fight of Cypriots against the British Empire.

What you can see there: Limassol Public Gallery is a fascinating place, not only for the "paintbrush lovers" but for the rest of the people as well. Here, you will meet a representative collection of contemporary Cypriot art. Specifically, the space is flooded with paintings, sculptures, pottery and constructions with mixed materials.

Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum

What you can see there: The museum accommodates cars from different periods and antiques. The specific collection includes historic vehicles with cultural value and it has a rental service, so you can rent a classic car with a driver.
