An Oasis In Klirou

A natural treasure found in Klirou village

If you are heading to the mountains around Nicosia area, there is a pit stop that is highly recommended to make. When passing form Klirou village in between Arediou and Kalo Xorio, you will witness a liquid oases, the Klirou reservoir that is located on the left side of the road. Klirou is a Historic Mining District and covers an area of 18.7 square kilometers. Situated in the northern foothills of the Troodos Mountains, 26 km southwest of Nicosia.

About the lake, an earthen dam was constructed to create the artificial lake, the construction of which was completed in 2007. In the same month, the artificial lake (reservoir) also became operational. The Artificial Lake Kliros has a capacity of 2 million cubic meters of water. The water collected in the lake comes from the river Serachis.The Artificial Lake Kliros was constructed to serve two functions:

a) the supply of water for irrigation of the riverside areas and

b) the enrichment of the underground aquifer downstream of the dam.
