Titans

Greek Mythology

Titans were the elder Gods, they were the gods that ruled the world before the Olympians. The ruler of the Titans was Cronus until Zeus his son de-throned him.
Cronus along with the other Titans fought against Zeus and their punishment was to be banished to Tartarus.
The other Titans were Gaea, Uranus, Rhea, Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion Mnemosyne, Themis, Iapetus, Coeus, Crius, Phoebe, Thea, Prometheus, Epimetheus and Atlas. Their names were connected with planets.

Gaea
Gaea is the Earth goddess.
Gaea and her son Uranus created the remaining Titans. Gaea used to be as a neolithic earth-mother and she was worshipped before the Indo-European invasion that eventually lead to the Hellinistic civilisation.

Uranus
Uranus is the god of the sky and first ruler.
He is the son of Gaea, she created him without help. He then became the husband of Gaea and they had many offspring, including twelve of the Titans.
Cronus, encouraged by Gaea, castrated him and took his throne. He either died from the wound or withdrew from earth.

Cronus
Cronus is the god of time, in particular time when viewed as a destructive, all-devouring force.
Cronus became the ruler by castrating his Father Uranus. His wife was Rhea. Their children were the first of the Olympians. Cronus ate each of the children as they were born to feel safe. Rhea to punish him for eating her children tricked Cronus into swallowing a rock, instead of Zeus.
Cronus escaped to Italy, where he ruled as Saturn. The period of his rule was a golden age on earth, honoured by the Saturnalia feast.

Rhea
Rhea is the goddess of female fertility, motherhood, and generation.
She was the wife of Cronus. Rhea saved her son Zeus by tricking Cronus into swallowing a rock instead of him.

Oceanus
Oceanus is the god of the unending stream of water encircling the world.
Oceanus with his wife Tethys produced the rivers and the three thousand ocean nymphs.

Tethys
Tethys is the goddess of the primal font of fresh water which nourishes the earth.
She is the wife of Oceanus. Tethys with her husband produced the rivers and the three thousand ocean nymphs.

Hyperion
Hyperion is the god of light, the father of the sun, the moon, and the dawn.
His wife was Theia. Hyperion fought against their father Cronus, Uranus, made him one of the pillars that holds the sky in place.

Mnemosyne
Mnemosyne os the goddess of memory and the mother of Muses.
Mnemosyne has absolute control and divine authority over memories. She was doing this for the dead to help them get back the memories of their past lives. She may even have domain over objects of visual memory, like recorded images like video or photographs.
She was the daughter of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea (Earth), and, according to Hesiod, the mother (by Zeus) of the nine Muses. She gave birth to the Muses after Zeus went to Pieria and stayed with her nine consecutive nights.

Themis
Themis is the goddess of justice, order, wisdom and good counsel, and the interpreter of the gods' will.
She was the second wife of Zeus. She was the mother of the Horae (“Hours”)/ Seasons and the Moirae (“Fates”). Some of her powers are prophecy/foresight and control over the Oracle at Delphi.

Iapetus
Iapetus was the god of mortality, god of death.
He presided over the timeline of all mortals. His nickname, "the piercer", actually meant that he came for a life of mortals in terms of violence. He is the father of Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Atlas.
He helped restrain Uranus, and thus became the west pillar that helped uphold the sky. When he got banished to Tartarus he became a bearer of the entire cosmos.

Coeus
Coeus is the god of Intelligence.
Father of Leto. his name meaning is "query" or "questioning".
Channelling Coeus allows one to gain Superhuman Intelligence; skill in research, argument/debate, analysis and deduction. One can psychically manipulate and absorb intelligence, by touch, or even gain psychically perceive and communicate with other smart people.

Crius
Crius is the God of the Constellations.
He was the pillar over the south pole. He held the sky up over the Earth along with his brothers at each of the world's four corners.
He wife was Eurybia, daughter of Pontus and Gaea, and had three children, Astraios, Pallas and Perses.

Phoebe
Phoebe is the goddess of the bright intellect, Titan of the Moon.
Mother of Leto. She was wife of Coeus and the grandmother of Apollon, Artemis and Hekate.
Phoebe was the third goddess to hold the great oracle of Delphi which she in turn bestowed upon her grandson Apollon.

Thea
Thea is the goddess of sight (thea) and the shining ether of the bright, blue sky (aithre).
She was the goddess who endowed gold and silver with their brilliance and intrinsic value. Thea created the Titan Hyperion three shining children--Helios the Sun, Eos the Dawn, and Selene the Moon.
Her name was derived from the Greek words thea "sight" and theiazô "prophesy". She was also named Aithre (Aethra) "Blue-Sky" and Euryphaessa "Wide-Shining".

Prometheus
Prometheus is the god of fire. He was stealing fire from gods and was giving it ti humans.
Hewas the wisest Titan. His name means "forethought" and he was able to foretell the future. He was the son of Lapetus. Prometheus deserted the other Titans and fought on Zeus side.
Prometheus is known as the protector and benefactor of man. He and his brother Epimetheus were delegated by Zeus to create man. He gave to the humankind the gift of fire.
He also tricked Zeus into allowing man to keep the best part of the animals sacrificed to the gods and to give the gods the worst parts.
Zeus chained Prometheus to a rock with an eagle tearing at his liver to punish him for tricking him. He was supposed to stay there for all eternity or until he agreed to disclose to Zeus which of Zeus children would try to replace him. He was eventually rescued by Hercules without giving in to Zeus.

Epimetheus
Epimetheus is the god of afterthought and excuses. He was a stupid Titan.
His name means "afterthought". He was the son of Lapetus. He is delegated, along with his brother Prometheus by Zeus to create humankind. He also fought on Zeus side against the Titans.
Zeus gave him the gift of Pandora and he accepted it and that led to letting the evil out into the world.

Atlas
Atlas was the god who bore the sky aloft.
He personified the quality of endurance (atlaô). Atlas was a leader of the Titans in their war against Zeus.
They say he has skills in philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy. He invented the first celestial sphere. In some texts, he is even credited with the invention of astronomy itself.
Atlas was the son of Lapetus. Due to Cronus's advance age Atlas lead the Titan's in battle. Zeus singled him out as a punishment and made to hold up the world on his back.

Metis
Metis is the goddess of the forth day and the planet Mercury.
She presided over all wisdom and knowledge.
She was seduced by Zeus and they gave birth to Athena. Zeus was concerned that her second child would replace him. To avoid this Zeus ate her. They say she is the source for Zeus wisdom and that she still advises Zeus from his belly.
