Vrysi ton Pegiotisson (Pegiotisson Fountain)
A unique attraction in Pegeia
“Vrysi ton Pegiotisson” is the name of a unique attraction in the village of Pegeia in Pafos which is actually a fountain. Centuries ago, some shepherds discovered a hill which was full of natural water sources. Upon one of these sources, the first fountain was built. The fountain was the main source of drinking water in Pegeia until 1956. Until a few years ago, there was still running drinking water from both the fountain and another natural source on the hill.
In 1907, the fountain was demolished and rebuild by the contractor Achilleas Constantinou from Lapithos. The fountain is a wonderful building which is connected with the history of Pegeia.
According the tradition, the young girls were gathered around the area where the fountain was, in order to meet their friends or their loved ones. Such a great love, was the reason for the creation of the well-known traditional song, “Vrysi ton Pegiotisson” by the poets of the time, who transported the news and the village's news by singing. In fact, they encouraged those who were hurt by love to go to the fountain and drink the water so they can be cured.
Nowadays, the Vrysi ton Pegiotisson is a unique attraction, monument and jewel for the village. It is in the middle of the village, below the Town Hall. The area is now being used for various events. Many villagers visit it almost every day to remember happy moments of their childhood, but also many foreigners visit it to admire this beautiful landscape full of green.
